Richmond Fergerson

Mr. Fergerson is a native of Savannah and graduated from Beach High School in 1960. He left Savannah for the big city and served 20-years on the New York City Transit Police Department; retiring as a Lieutenant in 1986. He also served 30 years in the United States Air Force and the NY Air National Guard. From 1986-1990. Fergerson worked as a real-estate appraiser for three nationally recognized banks and later, independently running his own appraisal firm. He was eventually lauded as being in the top 10% of real estate appraisers in the country. Richmond graduated cum laude from the New York Institute of Technology with a BS in Behavioral Science and is a 2004 graduate of the GSU Southeast Georgia Leadership Program.

In 1997 Fergerson built the Jabula Guest House & Natural Health Spa in Betty’s Bay near Cape Town, South Africa. He also co-founded Wisdom by YPF Natural Skin Care Products, a manufacturing and distribution company based in South Africa. In February 2000, he was invited by the US Consulate General in Paris, Strasbourg University to address the faculty and students on his experience participating in the 1995 Million Man March on Washington, D.C., and its effect on America.

In 2002 Richmond was selected by Homeland Security to train new TSA employees in bomb detection under the new federal airport safety guidelines. His team also certified J. R. Ford Airport in Grand Rapids, MI as the first federally compliant airport in America, which was also featured on CNN. Fergerson also served on the team that certified the Jacksonville International Airport in the new “Object Recognition” techniques; a method used to eliminate the need to hand examine checked luggage and regulated by the Department of Homeland Security.

Throughout the years Richmond has volunteered his time with numerous organizations, including Mentor Volunteer Programs, African American Male Achievement Group, Inc., and 100 Black Men of Phoenix. And it is the strong belief in uplifting the black community, which fueled his desire to create The Soul of Savannah: Savannah’s Premier Directory for Black, African-American & Minority-Owned Business and Community Events.
